Sensei Johan van Tonder started karate in 1976, and he became South African champion and a black belt at 15, and he began teaching while still a teenager. Over the next few decades he builts his own Shotokan dojo in Potchefstroom and took over coaching the NWU Potchefstroom karate team. Under his leadership, the dojo and NWU team have produced many champions and won around 20 consecutive University Sports South African titles, making it one of the country's most successful traditional karate centres.
